Key events

Rishi Sunak would have been relieved when Ben Houchen was declared the winner of the Tees Valley mayoral election, but he can’t hide the fact that it was a very poor election result, writes former prime minister Theresa May Garvin’s chief of staff Barwell.

Council elections are difficult to interpret – there are a host of local factors. The best thing to look at is what is known as the national equivalent vote share. The BBC estimate at the time of writing has Labor on 34% and the Conservatives on 25%.

This tells us two important things about British politics. First – if we didn’t already know it – that the Tories are probably heading for defeat, and potentially a heavy one, in the general election later this year: 25% is as bad as they got at the nadir of John Major’s Government (David Cameron recovered from a similar low, but that was mid-term, not a few months before election day).

Despite Rishi Sunak’s best efforts, the party has actually regressed slightly in the last 12 months.

Sadiq Khan has been re-elected mayor of London with the shortest term since the post was created 24 years ago, analysis by the Electoral Reform Society shows.

The Labor politician won 43.8% of the vote, which was enough to secure him a third term under the new First Past the Post system.

Labor won three of the eight Police and Crime Commissioner elections announced on Saturday, winning Cheshire from the Conservatives and retaining the West Midlands and Merseyside.

The Conservatives comfortably held Hertfordshire and Dorset and narrowly won Warwickshire by just 306 votes, 0.26%, the Thames Valley by 2,343 (0.52%) and Wiltshire by 2,233 votes (1.79%).

Labor won nine PCCs from the Conservatives on Friday, as well as retaining five.

The party now has 17 PCCs, the same as the Conservatives, with Plaid Cymru retaining Dyfed-Powys.

There are two results to be announced on Sunday, in Kent and Sussex.

Labor sources said they believed they had beaten Andy Street and taken the West Midlands mayor from the Conservatives.

Richard Parker and a large group of Labor campaigners gathered outside the Birmingham election count stage as we await the final results of the Sandwell vote.

As things stand, the party needs 11,456 more votes than Street in this final result to win. The party believes it will win around 12,000 votes in Sandwell, putting them in the lead by around 500 votes.

The final result will come soon.

Labor is contesting the West Midlands mayoral election

Labor sources say Richard Parker has beaten Conservative incumbent Andy Street in the West Midlands mayoral race, the Guardian understands.

With all 14 London Assembly constituencies declared, Labor had 10 seats, the Conservatives three and the Lib Dems one.

The Lib Dems claim they have won South West London and that Gareth Roberts has been elected to the London Assembly.

Lib Dem leader Ed Davey said: “The Lib Dems are going from strength to strength as the Conservatives go the way of the dinosaurs in south west London.

“It’s been a historic set of local election results for the Liberal Democrats and now we’re making more history here in London with Gareth Roberts AM newly elected.”

The results are in after a recount in Coventry and Andy Street is now just 11,455 votes ahead of Labour, with one body left to announce the West Midlands mayoral result.

In Coventry, Richard Parker took 32,704 votes to Street’s 23,327 – a big increase for Labor in the last close contest between the two parties.

But Labor still needs to make up just over 11,000 votes in Sandwell, where the independent candidate, pro-Palestinian lawyer Ahmed Yacoub, could have taken some of their share of the vote.

In Cheshire, Labour’s Dan Price beat Conservative incumbent John Dwyer to become Police and Crime Commissioner.

London mayoral candidate Earl Binface said “down with fascism, up with Syfax” after discovering he had beaten Britain First candidate Nick Scanlon.

He told reporters at the town hall: “It looks like I’ve beaten Britain First at the polls.

“Come on, you should be happy about that… Down with fascism, up with Ceefax, what can I say?”

As things stand, there are almost 21,000 votes separating Street and Parker – and Street is leading.

Just waiting for Coventry and Sandwell to announce their results. A recount is underway in Coventry, so the result there is expected to be very close.

The final result can be in an hour.

Labour’s West Midlands mayoral candidate Richard Parker polled almost 14,000 more votes than Andy Street in the Birmingham City Council area.

Parker received 80,251 votes in the city, followed by Street with 66,296 and a strong showing of 40,923 votes for pro-Gaza independent candidate Ahmed Yacoub.

In Walsall Street he received 24,735 votes, Parker 18,097 and Jacob 8,451.
